The Cocker Spaniel is a generally even tempered, loving dog that is affectionate and loving. She is a good watch dog and when properly bred, a great child companion. She can do well in an apartment as long as she gets frequent long walks. A properly fenced in enclosure is better for exercise.

Good With Children?

Cocker Spaniels are great with children as long as they come from reasonably good bloodlines. They are so popular that puppy mills are churning them out and some poor traits have been showing up. As a reminder, never leave a young child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.

Good With Other Pets?

Again, they are generally good with other pets as long as they have good bloodlines.

Temperament

This is a very friendly, loving dog and they are active.

Approximate Adult Size

The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Cocker Spaniel is 14 to 15 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 24 to 28 pounds.

Special Health Considerations

Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Cocker Spaniel is no exception. Be on the look out for eye problems, canine hip dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), epilepsy and slipping stifles, IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia), glaucoma, and patellar luxation.

This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

Grooming

The Cocker Spaniel has a soft, silky coat that needs almost daily brushing. Her coat can pick up brambles and debris and this must be brushed out of her coat before they form mats and cause skin problems.

Her ears should be checked once a week and be kept clean. If you have her professionally groomed, make sure ear cleaning and inspection is part of the package. No water or excess fluid should get in the dogs ears, and do not try to irrigate the ears. Ear cleaning is too complicated and critical to instruct here. Look for hair growing in the ear canal, excess wax, or moisture. If her ears have a discharge, foul odor or she seems to be in distress and you suspect an infection, or tumor, consult your veterinarian.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

Life Span

The Cocker Spaniel can live between 10 and 14 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

History

They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1878.

When most people see a puppy, their heart melts and they start yearning to get one. They see how cute the puppy is, how playful and how affectionate it is but what about the basic dog training that it requires?

What am I talking about? Well, for starters, your new puppy will need to learn a few things such as: becoming potty trained, to walk on a leash, to go to sleep at night without howling and certainly not to chew everything in site, including you.

Like a baby, a puppy has a lot to learn and limits are one these things. First of all, your puppy has no intention to displease you so when you see it has an accident on your carpet or on the floor; it is not its fault. Why? Simply because its bladder is so small and the muscles responsible for helping to control it or his bowels are not strong enough to do it yet. As it grows bigger and older, you will see the difference.

As for howling at night don’t forget that your puppy is missing the presence of its mother, it feels lonely and needs to cuddle up. As it will grow up, and that he starts feeling comfortable and at home, this behavior will come to an end.

And what about chewing? Well, he is basically teething. Also don’t forget that it is how it learned to play with its mother and siblings. Humans are more sensitive and so are their belongings so once again, basic dog training is required.

What can you do to train your dog in the best and most efficient way possible? Well, ask any veterinarian, dog breeders or experienced dog owners, using a crate is the solution.

Several people think that putting a dog in a cage is cruel and selfish but what they do not know is that later on, even the dog itself will enjoy it. It will become a safe and comfortable place where it can relax and sleep just like a doghouse.

Also, your puppy will not always be in its crate as it will be only at night and when you are gone to work or any other event where your dog will be left alone. At first your puppy may not like it, but believe me only time and patience will prove you the opposite.

Before purchasing a crate, you should consider a few things. For example, some crates are made of metal and are foldable and others are made of plastic and have a handle to carry it around if small enough.

The plastic one may be better for air travel or in some cases; car travel depending on its size but the fact that the view is limited due to the solid panels is one disadvantage as your puppy will feel lonelier. Also, if your puppy has an accident in it, the bad smells tend to seek in its surface due to a lack of aeration plus not having a removable tray, the cleaning is more difficult to do.

The metal crate tends to be bigger, especially if you have a bigger dog like a labrador retriever which makes it more difficult to find a space for it. They are solid, foldable which makes it easier when traveling and your puppy has a great view which helps against loneliness.

Also, a metal crate has a removable tray which makes cleaning a lot easier. Since it has great air circulation, the bad smells only follow the dirty newspapers in the garbage.

Another thing that you should not about crate training is that it helps the dog training of your puppy in several areas. For example, at night, it solves the problem of finding little accidents on your floor by stepping in them. Also since a dog does not want to sleep where he relieves itself, your puppy will try its best to control its bladder and bowel movements which will help to develop these muscles as well.

Don’t buy a crate too large for your puppy but make it large enough to accommodate your puppy when it will be fully grown.

When you are preparing the crate, make it inviting and as comfortable as possible for your puppy. Cover the bottom with newspapers if desired, put a blanket or basket in the opposite end and your new puppy’s home is ready.

To help you with the howling, as more than likely it will happen for a while, you can also take a clock that ticks loudly to remind him of its mother’s heartbeat and a hot water bag filled with hot water to allow him to cuddle against something that reminds it of the softness and warmth of its mother.

Another thing to do to help it feel less lonely, is to put either a radio, some music or the television set on so it can hear noise and voices in the background. Another thing that can help to prevent it from peeing in his crate is to control his water intake by removing its bowl at 8 p.m. or approximately 2 hours prior to your time going to bed. This advice was given to me by my dog’s veterinarian.

And last but not least, chewing will be controlled by keeping your puppy out of trouble. This way you will prevent him from being harmed by chewing electrical wires or simply from your frustration of having to replace damaged goods.

While there are many reasons to love your cat, obedience is probably not one of them. We all love watching our cats bounce around and play, but have you ever wished that you could get them to sit still? It’s easier than you might think; cats can be trained, just like dogs can, but it can take a bit longer and be a little more work. It can certainly be done, however, and you may be surprised by the results.

There are many benefits to training your cat to sit. First, it’s just nice to be able to get a little stillness from a cat that’s making you tired just from watching him run around. Second, if someone like a vet needs to take a look at him, the vet will appreciate a cat that knows how to sit still. Third, when your cat starts sitting, there’s a good chance he’ll stay sitting, and there’s nothing relaxing as nice as your cat purring in your lap, after all.

As with most cat training, this starts with a bribe. Make sure your cat is aware that you have one of his favorite treats in your hand. When he shows interest, slowly raise the treat over his head and slightly behind it, not high enough that he has to reach up. This should make your cat crane his head up and back.

The moment your cat is in a sitting posture, reward him with the treat and give him lots of praise. This is the first step to getting your cat to make the link between the command and the treat.

The key to this exercise is isolation of the command and repetition. Don’t reward the cat whenever he shows up, sits down and looks up at you expectantly; you’re training him, not the other way around! Don’t try to force your cat into this activity if he’s not interested in the treat. This will probably just annoy him and make him hide, and it is important to keep the good association in his head.

Try to get family members and friends into the act. This can especially help in making shyer cats used to other people and encourage them to socialize rather than hide.

After a few sessions, your cat will learn to sit when your hand alone is in the right position above his head. While you don’t need to use to the treat to get his attention anymore, do continue to reward him. As you may have noticed, cats tend not to do things for free. Soon enough though, you should be able to eliminate the treat entirely, though it is still very much worth it to reward your cat for good behavior from time to time.

Remember not to use the word “sit” too early, because if the cat has not yet learned to associate the motion with the verbal command, you may confuse him. After all, you don’t want your cat to start believing that “sit” means “look at my owner in confusion before walking away.

The Weimaraner is a dog that needs plenty of exercise and a place to run. Try to avoid running them after a meal as they may develop a life threatening bloat. This breed of dog will do better with three smaller meals a day rather then two or even one large meal. This is a very protective dog and can be a one person or one family dog. They may not be trusted with other pets due to their strong prey instinct. They may fight other canines. They need to be socialized with children and very young children are in danger of being knocked over but this athletic, highly active dog. They have a coat that is very pleasing to the touch. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.

Approximate Adult Size

The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male Weimaraner is 24 to 27 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 55 to 70 pounds. The female ranges from 22 to 25 inches to the withers and 50 to 65 pounds.

Special Health Considerations

Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Weimaraner is no exception. Be on the look out for bleeding disorders, gastric tension and Canine Hip Dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness).
Grooming

The Weimaraner has an easy care sleek, short and smooth coat that feels like heaven to the touch. She should be brushed regularly and rubbed down with a chamois to make her coat shine. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease.

Cat health is something all cat owners should know something about. You can improve and maintain the health of your cat, and doing this takes little time and effort. Cat health problems do arise, and in turn cat health questions are very common among cat owners. The reward for getting answers to these questions and solving these problems is insuring your cat is happy and healthy, and provides you with years of enjoyment and unconditional love. Cat health awareness begins the moment you acquire your feline, just by getting to know their habits and personalities. The logic behind this is that somewhere down the road, when you notice your cat has a sudden change in behavior, eating habits and sleeping habits, there is a good chance your cat has some sort of health issue.

It is a good practice to schedule a yearly check up at the vet to make sure there are no health concerns. Cat health can be maintained at home by simply examining your cat while you pet, play with or cuddle on the couch with him or her. Check for lumps, ticks or any other type of abnormality. The more often you do it, the easier it will become to spot any kind of change. If you notice a lump, black specs in the ears, eye gunk or a rash, you should consult the local veteranarian. These regular examinations are very important, because the sooner you notice the problem, the easier it will be to treat.

Grooming also plays a big role in cat health. The more often you groom him or her, the better off they will be. By grooming, you shoud remove a lot of dead hair, and there are combs specially made to extract ticks and fleas from your cats fur. Pay attention to your cats claws as well, as they sometimes require a quick trim. It’s fairly easy to clip your cats nails, but make sure you know how to properly perform this treatment and not cutting them too short. There are plenty of books on cat health at your local book store, and every cat owner should have one to consult every now and then. Owning a pet is a responsibility, and a responsible owner takes the time to do their best to make sure that pet is healthy.

Annoying fact in dog care: No matter how often you brush your dog’s mane and how hard you train it to become all prissy and well-behaved, it will roll itself in dirt just the same. The nastier and smellier the ground, the more likely your dog will gravitate to it and find sanctuary. This is simply the way they are.

So how do you spare yourself from the resulting stench and your dog from being a flea housing target? Give him baths nearly as often as you give yourself one. Okay, so maybe once or twice a week is enough.

 Bath Time, Rover

You dog’s size will spell the difference in how you are to administer his baths. Finding this out does not require rocket science. The bigger your dog, the harder it will be to care for it. If you have giant in your hands, then you must be prepared to get soaked yourself.

But, dog care need not be as nasty as it sounds. You can save yourself from getting too wet and gnarly if you prepare for the bathing battle early on.

 How It’s Done:

Dog Care Tip to Bathing Indoors

If you’re going to bathe your dog inside, its best to use a detachable shower nozzle so you have better control of where the water goes. Close your bathroom door and line the floor with a lot of towels as your dog is bound to get excited once water touches its fur.

To keep yourself on top of the game, have all his soaps and shampoos within arms reach, so you won’t have to stand up and leave your dog alone for a few seconds, where it is likely he will feel “free” and start a ruckus. Don’t open that door until after you’re done drying him up.

Dog Care Tip to Bathing Outdoors

This is best for larger dogs, where hosing their furs down won’t be much of a problem. If you’re looking to put him in a tub while you’re busy shampooing, a ramp might be able to help you get him into that pool of water more easily. Word of caution: seek assistance from somebody else. Big dogs are more difficult to control while bathing, and since you’re outdoors, surely you don’t want to see him rolling around dirt while you’re at it.

On both instances, keep in mind that if you don’t want your dog to flare up while you’re bathing him, make sure you don’t let the soap suds get into his eyes. You must also check the temperature of the water you’re going to put him in to avoid having to chase him around.

Giving your dog a bath is probably one of the more challenging tasks you’ll have to deal with if you truly care for him. And if you’re not iffy about getting yourself soaked in the process, then, by all means, play around. Dog care can be quite a chore sometimes, but it can also be a lot of fun.

If you have ever cared for a disabled, injured or sick dog, you know the heartbreak of seeing them struggle in pain while they continually to try to please you. In the case of an aging dog, their condition seems to go in cycles. They struggle and then they snap back for a while. Our family had a beautiful and gentle collie mix named Sadie. As she got older, she began to have noticeable difficulty due to joint problems. At first it was difficult getting up and down from a lying position. Then getting up stairs was a challenge. Ultimately the long walks got shorter.

Initially we accepted it and assumed it was part of the aging process and simply tried to accommodate her with a softer bed, fewer stairs and shorter walks. When we went to our vet for advice and he recommended that we supplement her diet with a high-quality antioxidant supplement. This worked great and she was back to her old self. Finally about three years later we began to see the same problems reappear. This time our vet added a prescription medication that we used in conjunction with the antioxidant.

Once again she got better but her condition got the best of her. She still got around but with great difficulty. We wanted to help her so we got creative and fashioned assistive devices out of household items and building materials. These included a make shift sling to help get her into the car and a ramp to help her get in and out the back door. She suffered into her old age with grace and dignity and always seemed grateful for our attempts to make her life happy, fun and less painful. For many other dogs with even more severe disabilities there are commercially made products to help you with the challenge of assisting them with issues of comfort and mobility as long as possible.

Ways to help your pet may include a sling to help them get up. Be sure to never try to lift (suspend) a dog using a sling around their middle. They need to be cradled when you lift them. However you can use the sling to help them use their own strength to make things easier. You can also fashion a smaller sling or harness to be used to assist them in walking. This sling is placed around them in front of the rear legs. If you are not feeling creative there are many websites that offer quality products that can do the job such as www.handicappedpets.com.

For some owners and their dogs, there are even greater challenges. Some family pets have suffered an injury or illness that has left them unable to walk. For these situations there are doggie wheelchairs. Most of the time when dogs use these devices, they drag their paws and need to wear protection on their feet. Again, these can be homemade or they can be purchased. There are many choices and you will need to closely evaluate your dog’s specific need and “wear pattern” that is created when they drag their paws. Dogs actually adjust remarkably well to these assistive measures once they discover their new found mobility.

Whatever your dog’s needs are, they appreciate your gentle concern and encouragement. If your pet is beginning to have signs of limited mobility, please seek the help of your veterinarian. There are wonderful, healthy, holistic products on the market that can help. Many products can be found on www.healthydoghouse.com that can even help in preventing discomfort and disease progression. Don’t simply assume that their symptoms are a part of the aging process. They probably have many pain-free years ahead of them with the right intervention and nutritional supplements.

Enjoy your time together!

Obedience training is one of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself. In fact, a well trained dog is by far a happier dog! Why? Because a trained dog requires much fewer restrictions, so the more reliable the dog, the more freedom he/she is given.

Dogs are social animals and without proper training, they will behave just like animals.(A dog is a pack animal. It prefers to be with companions) They can soil your house, chew your belongings, bark at everything that moves, dig up your back garden, attack other dogs and even attack you or your children! Training serves to strengthen the bond between a dog and his owner. It builds communication and mutual respect, and effectively demonstrates to your dog that you’re the leader of the pack without resorting to smacking or hitting. Dogs have their own personalities and mindset. They can be stubborn, dominant, submissive, or fearful, characteristics that can make them difficult to own and train.

Obedience training is also an easy way to establish the social hierarchy. Training can be accomplished at home, in an obedience class, or with a private trainer. When your dog obeys a simple command he/she is showing compliance and respect for you. A well-behaved, obedient trained dog is a pleasure to own because he can go virtually anywhere without being a risk or nuisance to others or themselves ( an untrained dog loose near traffic is an accident waiting to happen). At the end of the day dog obedience training really benefits everybody. Remember dog ownership is a big responsibility and there is nothing fast and simple about it, consistency is important in dog training, in fact patience, persistence and consistency are the most important concepts in any kind of teaching. Obedience training should be fun and rewarding for both you and your dog.

When searching for a trainer or instructor to help with training your dog there are different types of training available, remember an obedience instructor works with people not dogs, then the people work with their pets. Whereas a dog trainer teaches your dog to obey, then teaches you how to get the dog to listen to you.

Author is a long term dog trainer and rescuer, see more of her articles on dog-daft.co.uk/dog-training-and-obedience-a-tutorial-on-how-to-train-dogs-and-puppies/ dog training and obedience here, remember a well trained dog is a happy dog and happy dogs make happy owners!
