Keeping Your Pooch Warm in Winters

For most pet lovers trying to envisage a moment of absolute contentment, the image of sitting in the wintry sunshine with their pet animal in their lap would probably come forth unbidden. For any pet lover, the word “warm cuddle” would evince the response “my pet” as the season for warm cuddles with our furry friends is round the corner. It seems that by some divine design our dogs and cats have been specially attired for this season. But nothing puts a bigger dampener on this season of cheer than a bout of cold, cough and sneezes. Some of us have an unfortunate tendency of believing that our pets don’t succumb to the vagaries of winter as easily as we do. The truth is that they need as much care to be able to return that warm cuddle.

Following is a list of do’s and don’ts to help you give your pets the cold weather care they deserve.

A) Pups are unable to handle extreme weather conditions so make sure they are always well covered. Pay special attention at night time as pups may fall asleep on the bare floor and catch a bad chill. A warm bedding with a cosy blanket should suffice. Its better to serve warm food. Avoid giving cold water, curd, ice creams etc. A warm water sponge is a better alternative to bathing.

B) All the vaccination and deworming should be up to date as viruses thrive at this time of the year.

C) A change of season is the time when the physiological apparatus of the body is under duress and leads to a lowered resistance against common diseases. So make sure the pets is well nourished. Switching to a commercial dry dog food will make things simpler. The food should be calorie rich to generate enough energy to copy with the cold especially so for dogs living at higher altitudes. An increase in fats and proteins is also recommended.

D) Protect your pet with woolen clothes as per the individual requirement. In places where it snows, the pet should be kept indoors to avoid unnecessary exposure and to prevent snow related accidents. Specially designed footwear for dog paws should be used when taking out for walks to prevent frostbite.

E) Towel or blow-dry your dog if he gets wet from rain or snow. Pay special attention to paws. Vaseline can be used to remedy dry paws, muzzle and small cracks/cuts.

F) Outdoor dogs need extra protection in the form of an elevated, well-covered shelter to protect against the cold breeze. Extreme cold conditions warrant the use of heaters equipped with humidifiers.

G) Alter the walk timings to later in the morning and earlier in the evening. Apart from providing them with sunlight it will also keep them away from chilly part of the day.

H) Do not clip your pet’s hair at this time of the year as it provides them with natural insulation. Most dogs shed their summer coats before getting a new winter coat. Dry skin is common in indoor pets probably because of use of heaters leading to low humidity. To remedy this frequent brushing and providing them with hair care supplements is advised.

I) Ideally bring down the bathing frequency to once in 2 months.

J) Dogs are just as likely to get dehydrated in winters as in summers, so always provide them with fresh water.

K) People who have never experienced their pet having a cough might confuse it for retching/vomiting. A cough, if left untreated, may develop into pneumonia. There can also be heavy dripping from the nose or a thick nasal/ocular discharge. Causes might include a simple bacterial infection or an influenza virus in unvaccinated dogs.

L) Smog might trigger an attack in an asthmatic dog so be well prepared in advance with emergency medicines. Allergies are common with the change in season and can simply be remedied with anti-allergy drugs.

M) Vomiting and loose motions could be a simple reaction to the season change or a bacterial infection. It can also indicate the presence of deadly virus such as canine parvovirus or canine distemper. Either ways do not delay the treatment.

N) Old dogs should be showered with the kind of care and attention that we would give to our grandparents or any other old person for that matter. Old age can inflict several problems like arthritis, lowered immunity to respiratory infections, heart ailments, etc. The winter cold can exacerbate any such existing problem. If your dog has trouble getting up, sitting down, is limping or gets stiff after exercise, these could be the intitial warning signs of osteoarthritis. This is a degenerative joint disease and appropriate medication for pain relief should be provided. Supplements like cod liver oil have proven to be helpful.

So here’s wishing all the pets a healthy, warm and a cheery winter.

The Seven Foods That Must Always Be Kept Away From A Guinea Pig

If you know what food you should be feeding your guinea pig, you
should also know that there are some things that you shouldn’t feed
them.

If you accidentally feed your guinea pig something from this list
that is not poisonous, just watch him or her carefully for signs of
illness. However, you’ll want to call or take him to the vet
immediately if he or she has ingested something poisonous.

The forbidden items

- Do not feed your guinea pig iceberg lettuce. While most leafy
greens do provide an excellent source of Vitamin C for your guinea
pig, iceberg lettuce does not. You’re better off purchasing kale or
cabbage for your pet.

- Do not feed your guinea pig long stalks of celery. Those stringy
pieces that can get wound up in your garbage disposal are just as
hard for your guinea pig to digest. If your guinea pig likes
celery, you need to cut it up into smaller pieces before you give
it to them.

- Do not feed your guinea pig any shelled nuts or seeds. Your
guinea pig can easily choke on the pieces of the shell. Also, be
careful about the guinea pig treat sticks that are sold in pet
stores because these often contain shelled seeds.

- Do not feed your guinea pig rhubarb, beans, or potatoes with
green spots. These are all poisonous to your guinea pig.

- Do not feed your guinea pig certain types of plants. While some
plants, like dandelions and clover, are safe for your guinea pig,
many others are poisonous to him or her. Daffodils, hyacinths,
poppy, and buttercups are some of those too avoid.

- Do not feed your guinea pig any dairy products.

Although some people may suggest feeding their guinea pigs yogurt in order to
clean out their digestive systems, you should avoid feeding any
dairy product to your guinea pig because they are lactose
intolerant, which means their bodies can not properly process daily
products.

Also, excess calcium will cause guinea pigs to develop kidney
and/or bladder stones.

Remember:

If you accidentally feed your guinea pig something from the list
above that is not poisonous, just watch him or her carefully for
signs of illness. However, you’ll want to call or take him to the
vet immediately if he or she has ingested something poisonous.

Tips Breeding Your Dalmatian

Selecting a female Dalmatian that you plan to breed is very important for proper breeding. You must choose one who you hope will become the foundation of your kennel. This means that she must be of the finest producing bloodlines with an excellent temperament and free of major faults such as deafness. Be cautious if you are offered a “bargain” brood female dog. This is a purchase to where you should not settle for less than the best and the price will be in accordance with the quality.

Conscientious breeders feel very strongly that the only reason for producing puppies is to improve and uphold the quality and temperament within the breed. It is not because he or she hopes to make a quick cash profit on an average litter, which never seems to work out in the long run and only accomplishes little beyond perhaps adding to the unfortunate number of unwanted dogs.

With conscientious breeders, the only intention for breeding a litter is a desire to improve the quality of dogs in their own kennel. As pet owners the reason for breeding is to add to the number of dogs that they own with a puppy or two from their present favorites.

If you really are serious about breeding, it is always advisable to seek advice from the breeder of your bitch, it is likely that they will advise you if your bitch is suitable for breeding and help to answer the many questions you may have.

Finding the right stud dog for your bitch is most important, and reputable breeders have the knowledge required to be able to help you choose the right one for you and your bitch.

Dog Worms: Understand Dog Worms Symptoms and Infestation

Until a very recent period, dog worms were thought to be of a spontaneous origin, brought about by the influence of heat upon decaying vegetable matter, and it was and still is freely asserted that puppies are born with dog worms inherited from the mother in some mysterious manner while still in uterus. This has been conclusively proven an error and in the minds of all scientists there is no question about dog worms springing from individual eggs and having a complete life history of their own.

The principal worm species with which dog owners have to contend are round worms and tape worms. The first named commonly infest puppies and consequently are most dreaded by breeders. In shape and size these worms resemble common angle worms, but in color are lighter, being almost white or only a pale pink.

In adult dogs these worms, when full grown, are from three to seven inches long. In puppies they are about half that length, and as thick as common white string. Round worms live in the small intestines, sometimes coiled in such masses as to obstruct the passage, and occasionally they wander into the stomach or are passed by the bowels.

It is easy to understand that when one dog in a kennel is infected with worms, millions of eggs will be passed with the feces. These are scattered all over the floors, bedding, feeding and drinking pans. They get on the dog’s coat, are licked off and swallowed and in numbers of ways gain entrance to the digestive tracts of other dogs, where they soon hatch out and in ten days are fully developed.

This rapid development account for the popular belief that puppies are born with worms, for breeders who have held post-mortems on puppies scarcely ten days old and have found in their stomachs fully developed round worms could account for their presence in no other way. They overlooked the fact that the prospective mother, confined in a kennel infested with worms, would get these eggs attached to her coat, belly and breasts, and the young, as soon as born, would take these eggs into their stomachs with the first mouthfuls of milk.

Symptoms Of Dog Worms Attack

Dog worms are responsible for so much sickness and so many symptoms that it is practically impossible to mention all of them, but their presence can safely be suspected in all dogs which have not been recently treated for them, as well as in cases where the patient is run down, unthrifty and out of sorts.

Other symptoms are a hot, dry nose, weak, watery eyes, pale lips and gums, foul breath, mean hacking cough and a red, scurfy, pimply or irritated condition of the skin and harsh, dry, staring coat that is constantly being shed.

Wormy dogs sometimes have a depraved appetite and will eat dirt and rubbish. Some days they are ravenously hungry, the next day they will not eat at all; their sleep is disturbed by dreams and intestinal rumbling, the urine is high colored and frequently passed, bowels irregular, stomach easily unsettled, watery mucus is frequently vomited and the mouth is hot, sticky and full of ropy saliva.

Puppies which are full of worms bloat easily and are pot-bellied. After feeding their stomachs distend disproportionately to the amount of food consumed. Their bodies are also subject to scaly eruptions and their bowels to colicky pains; they do not grow as rapidly as healthy puppies should and instead of playing with each other they curl up and sleep hour after hour; they get thinner, weaker and more lifeless from day to day and if they do not waste away or die in fits and convulsions with frothing at the mouth and champing of the jaws, grow up coarse-jointed, rickety and misshapen. Puppies with worms are also liable to paralysis of their rear limbs and on removal of the worms the puppies regain control of the affected parts.

A wormy dog is usually an unhealthy and unhappy dog who leads a miserable life. It could even be deadly, especially so for young puppies. Bring your dog to a veterinarian if you are unsure. Your dog will certainly thank you for that.
