Know the Dog Breeds for Their Works
Dog buyers normally have a concrete idea of what dog breed to buy. Yet it must be understood that no single dog can fill all our expectations. They may either perform at a level we so desire but we have no assurance that the pet we buy (especially when bought as a puppy) will look in the same manner as we expected them to be when they mature.
Dogs were primarily bred to fill into categories that man thought would be beneficial for him. Dog breed characteristics often conform to the pattern that breeders intended them to be. Say for example those breeds that were bred to work, to guard or to herd. There are however, dogs that were created as companions, others as toys.
Each dog breed off course will perform all these tasks in differing manners since they have varying temperament, physical and mental attributes, and other underlying factors.
The following section of this article discusses how each breed performs the designation they were assigned to. It is, however, not according to the classifications provided by the AKC grouping.
Sporting dogs They were bred primarily to assist man in hunting and retrieving the games. Because they were natural hunters, they have great tendencies for attentiveness and extreme obedience. They are equipped with superb stamina, which if not use, may lead to over activity at home. So it is important that they get proper and regular training to bring out their natural energy resources.
Flat Coated Retriever Golden Retriever Labrador Retriever German Shorthair Brittany English Setter Standard Poodle Irish Setter Rhodesian Ridgeback
Herding Dogs Marked by their independence and obedience, this breed covers fine dogs that are energetic and those that has the capacity to control other animal species. They have some streaks of independence though and may often cause irritation to humans who cannot understand why they behave as they do (destructiveness, child chasing and nipping).
Australian Cattle Dog Australian Shepherd Bearded Collie Border Collie Collie German Shepherd Dog Shetland Sheepdog
Self-employed This breed in general, covers species that have the capacity to think and work independently and are usually categorized in the working breed. They are good in protecting properties and owners (especially children), rescue operations, herd protection, and sled and cart pulling. Because they are naturally intelligent, they need to be constantly fed with interesting and rigorous activities that will help condition their spirits properly. However, aggression between dogs of this type and their relation to other dog breed often cause harm.
Akita American Eskimo dog Boxer Briard Doberman Chow Alaskan Malamute Newfoundland Rottweiler St. Bernard
Toy Dogs Toy dogs, though the term “toy” is often subject to confusion, they still make great lap and companion dogs. Perfect for city dwellers, toy dogs provide humans only one thing -sheer delight. However, these come with training. If they were not properly taught how to behave, they can be very destructive inside the house. They also have long lifespan which seem to be the pleasure (and the displeasure) of their owners.

Shih Tzu Topknots, Eyes, And Ear Care
The standard coat of a Shih Tzu should be luxuriously long and dense with a good wooly undercoat. The hair on top of the head may be tied up. When a Shih Tzu is completely brushed and combed the Shih Tzu should have a sleek look. The beard come to a point and a long, luxuriant moustache flows over the beard.
Method of making a Shih Tzu or Shih Tzu puppy topknot:
1. Part the hair from the ear on both sides of the head.
2. Gather up in one hand the hair in the middle and slip on a latex band at the base.
3. The band may have to be wrapped around twice to make it secure.
4. A ribbon or barrette is recommended to be attached to latex band.
How to make your own Shih Tzu or Shih Tzu puppy bows:
1. Cut one yard of ribbon. The ribbon can be any width you desire.
2. From this yard of ribbon, cut another piece about 5” long. Splice this in half lengthwise.
3. Cut the remainder of the yard in half. This material should give you enough for two ribbons or bows.
4. Wrap one of the long pieces around two fingers. Slip the folded ribbon off your fingers and double it over.
5. With a utility scissors, snip off a piece at the corners in a “V” shape, but not a sharp V, for you will lose any thread of support. There should be a piece of ribbon left at the centerfold to hold it all together.
6. Take one of the spliced pieces (5”) and tie the ribbon at the centerfold securely.
7. Separate each fold by gently pulling out and twisting each fold out from the center. Do both sides. When all the folds are pulled out and twisted, the bow is completed. All that remains is to fasten the bow to a tuft of hair, using the ends of the center splice to tie the knot. Cut off any excess ribbon that remains.
Care of the Shih Tzu or Shih Tzu puppy’s ears:
Because of the long hair covering the Shih Tzu puppy’s ears, problems can develop when the ear gets little air. Clean the excess hair out of your Shih Tzu puppy’s ear canal (not the ear flap) to improve air circulation and help prevent infection.
Care of the Shih Tzu’s eyes:
Shih Tzu generally have large eyes with shallow sockets. A Shih Tzu’s eyes are more prone to injury than most other breeds. If your Shih Tzu puppy’s eyes are red or cloudy or tear excessively, or if your dog squints and rubs at his eye, have a vet look at your Shih Tzu puppy’s eye to determine the cause.
Professionalism in Shih Tzu grooming:
The word professional means “one skilled in a profession, craft, or art. The word professionalism is defined as “the methods, manner, or spirit of a profession.
To become professional at anything, one must have the skills appropriate to the art, craft or profession and must conduct themselves professionally.

Allergies in Dogs – Organic and Natural Food Can Help
Many dogs experience allergies. Allergies are caused for a variety of reasons. Allergies can be seasonal and triggered from grasses, weeds, and trees. Seasonal allergies are usually inhalant or flea allergies. Allergies can also be triggered from your dog’s diet. In either case, having your dog tested by your vet is always recommended. If your dog is diagnosed with food allergies (which sometimes can be difficult to diagnose), there is good news, changing your dog’s diet to a raw food diet or an organic natural diet may be helpful.
What are some of the signs that your dog may have allergies?
Is your dog externally scratching excessively?Does your dog have red mucousy eyes? Are there hot spots of raw red flesh on their body?Does your dog experience frequent diarrhea or vomiting?Does your dog have excess hair loss?Has your recently experienced weight loss?Over the past thirty years there has been a gradual deterioration of the quality of commercial pet food. This is causing our pets to become less tolerant of our environment; with food, with viruses, with bacteria, with insects, with life. The commercial pet food has been filled with poor quality ingredients and chemical additives. Most of these products fail to meet the minimum daily nutritional requirements. Over your dog’s life, sickness and chronic health problems arise leading to many allergic reactions and degradation in environmental tolerance. As pet owners, none of us would intentionally subject our dog’s to these conditions but we have all fallen prey to commercial marketing and convenience.
The problem has been recognized With the recent scare of the tainted pet food in the news, pet owners are more aware today than ever before. The good news is that are many replicable companies that have been researching and developing high-quality organic and natural pet foods. Most of these companies market and sell through the internet leaving the commercially produced pet foods for the grocery and retail stores. Make sure to do your homework first.
Research the pet food carefully before buying. Check out the specialty web-stores instead of the retail outlets. Look for the following type of information when conducting your research: What is the health philosophy of the company; What type of information literature do they have available about their products; What is their stated manufacturing controls; Are they endorsed by or affiliated with a veterinarian. These are all good areas to discover when researching for a good pet food company. The pet food companies all have a good story to tell about their research conducted, why their products are better or higher quality than commercially purchased pet food, make sure you feel comfortable that their claims are backed up by reliable literature. One last thought, not all organic dog food taste equal. Your dog may or may not like the taste. Make your initial purchase in a smaller quantity; make sure your dog likes the flavor before purchasing too large of a quantity.
In summary, we have unfortunately added to the gradual deterioration of our pet’s health and their tolerance to our environment through the continual use of poor quality pet food. Now is the time to shift your dog’s diet to a higher quality, natural organic dog food. Do yourself a favor and do your pet a favor and feed him what he deserves to stay healthy. Below is a link to a review website of several organic pet food companies, this is a great place to start your research.

How to Make Your Pets Healthier and Happier
Pets are family members and should be treated as such. The design of your home has a dramatic affect on their health and well-being. When your environment is in harmony with nature, it will have a positive influence. If not, behavior al and health problems will show up in your animals in subtle and not so subtle ways. By applying the environmental science of Vastu Shastra, you can create harmony and balance in your home that will support your pets. Vastu Shastra was written some 7,000-10,000 years ago in India by rishis, or men of great wisdom. Over a period of thousands of years, these wise scholars studied and chronicled the strong influence that the physical environment has on all living things. Through these observations, an exact science was formulated, which established the principles behind some of the world’s most enduring structures.
My wife and I have experienced firsthand the benefits that some simple corrections using Vastu can have on pets. Our dog had a variety of skin and bladder control problems. Our cat was aggressive and territorial, fighting with the dog and bringing into the house anything she could carry. It always surprised us how she could get adult rabbits and baby crows through the cat door, but she managed! Small but effective changes using Vastu, reduced these problems significantly.
According to the science of Vastu Shastra, all five elements (earth, water, fire, air and space) have an impact on your pets. Vastu balances the five elements and promotes harmony within the environment. When there is harmony, stress is reduced and animals can find their equilibrium. Due to their size, pets are far more susceptible to the consequences of poor air quality and indoor pollutants than their caretakers. Flooring, decorating materials, mattresses, molds, toxic gases, pesticides and electronic equipment can all degrade the air you and your pet breath, even if you are seemingly unaffected.
These are examples of the dangers lurking in your home, unbeknownst to you. In this situation, what you can’t see can harm both you and your pets. Knowledge is power. Becoming aware of what you can do to protect your pets is the best preventative measure there is. We can’t emphasize enough the importance of reading all labels carefully to determine the safety of any materials that you use in your home.
Another factor that we’ve seen affect pets as well as humans is Geopathic Stress. This occurs when radiation follows lines of underground utilities and streams. Electrical wiring in the home can also disrupt the balance of the five elements if improperly placed. Such conditions have been scientifically proven to influence the health and disposition of your pets. Indoor environmental testing for geopathic stress can build your peace of mind and protect you and your pets.
There are several things you can do yourself to make changes in your environment for positive results. Here are some actions you can take today that will make a world of difference:
Fresh air is extremely important for pets. Many houses are so tightly built that household pollutants build up in the interior air if windows are not open. Having a window open, even a quarter of an inch, will help eliminate toxins that can accumulate and circulate in the air. Also, be aware that pets like the room temperature a little cooler than we do. Too much heat (fire) can make them lethargic and shorten their life span. Changing their water twice a day is also essential since water absorbs many of the air born toxins. Make sure to give them purified water rather than tap water. Tap water can contain bacteria and chemicals that aggravate a variety of sensitivities.
These are just a few steps that you can take to create proactive support for your pets. According to Vastu Shastra, all five elements need to be considered and balanced properly to experience the full advantages of Vastu. We suggest having your home analyzed by a qualified Vastu professional. Because they are sensitive by nature, you will be delighted by how quickly pets respond to an environment that has been balanced in harmony with Nature using the science of Vastu Shastra.

Animal Hospitals
Animal hospitals are hospitals that provide veterinary care for sick or injured pets like dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and small mammals. The doctors specializing in animal medicine are known as veterinarians. These hospitals include 24 hour emergency veterinary services in addition to surgical, standard medical and dental veterinary care. They also provide specialized treatment including advanced diagnostic services, internal medicines and surgery. The other services include orthopedic care, radiology, and cardiology. Exotic pets like reptiles, ferrets, pocket pets etc., are also taken care of there. Pharmaceutical products are available in the animal hospitals to provide total pet care. Animal hospitals also conduct a variety of pet wellness programs, including vaccinations and routine health examinations. Animal hospitals play a vital role in the prevention of diseases of animals that can be transmitted to man.
The services provided by a good animal hospital include complete health care, diagnosis, animal sheltering, animal behavior and training programs, and pet population control. Some hospitals also offer kennel-boarding facilities. These boarding facilities are doctor supervised and are safe and comfortable for a pet while the owner is away. The kennel boarding facilities can be day care for working owners or for long stays. Animal hospitals also provide pets for adoption.
To provide better health facilities to animals, the American Animal Hospital Association was founded in 1933 by seven veterinary professionals. AAHA serves more than 3,000 hospital members in the U.S. and Canada, and over 36,000 veterinary care providers in North America and overseas.
With owners willing to spend money on their pet’s well being, the availability of luxury services and products has considerably increased. More animal hospitals are now coming up with the objective of providing full support for the total health care of animals.

Do Cats Think?
I don’t know why I thought I could get away with it.
When my cat “Bear” jumped onto my lap expecting his morning petting session, I wondered if THIS time I could get away with reading the newspaper while giving him a few off-hand, preoccupied strokes.
“Heh, heh”, I thought. “I’ll start by giving him my full attention but then I’ll sneak my paper in when he’s not looking.” I “chucked” him under the chin while stroking him from head to tail, and he began rolling in ecstasy.
When he turned his back on me, sprawling on his stomach, my moment came. Quickly, I reached for the newspaper with my right hand. Continuing to pet Bear with my left, I opened it to the front page.
Bear put his ears back.
“Uh, oh”, I said to myself. “But wait…he can’t see what I’m doing. How does he know that I’m cheating?”
But he knew.
Bear tolerated it for a few moments; his ears laid back, his tail thrashing. Suddenly he leaped from my lap and lay down on the floor. After a few minutes of washing, he stared at me with an accusing expression.
I’d spoiled HIS morning petting session with my own selfishness and he was clearly letting me know the error of my ways.
Do Cats Think?
Cat owners may be the only pet lovers who sincerely believe their pets think. It won’t be the first time that a cat owner has the distinctly uncanny feeling that not only does his beloved cat think, but that he is being manipulated by her.
Veteran cat owners have noticed:
• Cats are an extremely obsessed and determined animal.
• Cats seem to contemplate things and make decisions.
• Cats choose and adopt people.
• Cats become offended and can hold grudges at insults to their dignity. Fortunately they forget them pretty quickly.
• They are embarrassed easily and seem to cover it up with nonchalant behavior.
• They are extremely independent, but want to cooperate with humans as long as this spirit of cooperation is thoroughly disguised.
In short, the cat “owner” always has the vague feeling that he is somehow being conned, but is never sure exactly in what way.
What do we mean by the word “think”?
Answers.com defines the ability to think as “To exercise the power of reason, as by conceiving ideas, drawing inferences, and using judgment.”
Arguably, it is the power of reason, the ability to conceive ideas, use judgment and put the results into action that has placed Man at the top of the food chain. In other words, Man dominates his/her environment because of his/her ability to think.
The cat brain and cat behavior
Cats are often used as experimental animals because the feline brain is structured like the human brain. The question is, however, do these similarities result in similar cognitive processes, i.e., can a cat actually assemble information, reason things out and make decisions?
The cat’s lack of cooperation with trainers has been taken either as a high degree of intelligence on the part of the feline (either too smart to do what a human tells her to) or a low degree (too stupid to be amenable to training).
Cat lovers usually opt for the former having the distinct impression that they, not their cats, are being trained.
Can cats use tools?
A writer for About.com, J. Justin Lancaster, reported that his cat Sasha had discovered a way to wet down her dry cat food by carrying a cotton hair “scrunchy” to the toilet to wet it and subsequently using it to drip water on her food. This may be the most sophisticated use of tools ever observed in the non-human animal kingdom.
On the other hand, most cat owners observe that a cat, when confronted with an obstacle barring her from a goal, will never move the obstacle out of the way. If the obstacle falls out of the way the cat will be momentarily surprised, but will then proceed to reach the unobstructed goal.
When finding herself again in the same situation, with the same destination blocked by the same obstacle, the cat will not knock the obstacle out of the way even though previous experience has shown that this is the best way reach the goal.
The jury is out
So, the jury is either out, or “hung”, on the question of whether or not cats think.
But when my cat, without looking at me, knows that I’m not giving him my full attention, and gives every evidenced of being miffed at this, I wonder.
Why is petting him while reading the newspaper not the same thing as petting him while using my full concentration?
It doesn’t make sense unless I accept the possibility that he has thought it out. That he has decided that it is either all or nothing, and he just isn’t going accept “playing second fiddle” to a newspaper. And his conclusion is: I’d better shape up. Anything short of my full attention is not acceptable.
He is going to get a full petting from me — or not at all.

Why Does My Cat Bite My Hand When I Stroke Her?
You have settled into your favorite armchair, perhaps reading the final chapters of a gripping novel. Suddenly you are aware of the imploring stare of your cat sitting at your feet. You invite her onto your lap. Gently you begin to stroke her and your cat signals her appreciation with an audible purr.
One hand holding your book the other hand continuing to pet your mouser, you again get lost in your novel. All is well in the world with you and with your cat.
Suddenly your cat bites your hand!
Why did kitty do that? Why did she bite the hand that strokes her?
The experts don’t agree on exactly why it is that some cats enjoy being petted, but end up biting. One thing that they do agree on is that when kitty bites at you, it’s a sure sign that she has decided that she’s had enough stroking.
Cats differ in the amount of petting they will accept, and not all cats respond by biting when they have had enough. Some cats simply jump from your lap and saunter off to investigate interests anew. But many cats will nip you and your animal is one of them.
Could you have known that a bite was on its way? Yes, there are often signs that cats give before biting. And, if you had not been so wrapped up in reading your novel, you may have paid heed to your little pets warning.
If kitty’s tail begins to twitch, in a rolling flick, watch out! She’s getting ready to chomp at your hand.
If your cats ears start turning towards the back of her head, or flatten against her head, that’s a warning a bite is coming.
If your cat suddenly becomes restless, or stiffens and stares at your hand, she could be about to nip you.
If you noticed any of these signals, simply stop stroking your cat. Your pet will either stay on your lap or jump down and walk off, whichever happens you don’t get bitten.
What you should not do is punish your cat for biting your hand. That simply does not work. Cats are more likely to identify the punishment with you rather than with their bad cat behavior. If you miss a warning sign and kitty manages to get her jaws around your hand, try to resist the temptation to pull your hand away or push your cat away. Simply freeze. Chances are that your cat will not sink her teeth in, she has got her message across, and you have stopped petting her.
If you try and push your cat away it is likely that she will fight with your hand resulting in skin punctures for you. (An animal bite can become infected quite easily, if your cat does draw blood clean up the wound scrupulously and seek the advice of your doctor.)
Why do some cats behave in this aggressive way? The degree of tolerance to petting may be genetic, or it may be learned behavior. If when your cat was a kitten you allowed her to chew on your hand in play, she learned that biting human hands was an OK thing to do. So, when she feels that she has had enough stroking (she’s the boss remember,) she will bite at your hand to let you know – if you ignore her warning signals.
Some experts recommend the use of healthy tidbits, as a reward, in order to increase the time your cat will tolerate stroking. At the first warning signal offer kitty a treat, continue to stroke your cat gently for a time and offer her another reward. It is said that your cat will learn to connect petting with the tidbits and may, with patience, allow you to pet her for longer periods.

What Kind Of Pet Should You Get For Your Child?
If you have kids, you should seriously consider getting them pets. That being said, which ones should you choose?
So you’ve finally broken down and decided to get your kids a pet! Before you welcome Rover or Spot into your house, you need to decide what pet is best for your children. Not all pets are created equal and in fact, many animals which are commonly bought for children do not make good pets at all. Here is a look at some of the better pets for kids.
Dogs can be playful and affectionate. They come in all sizes so you should be able to find one that fits your space limitations. Dogs can be quite different in temperament and you need to research the different breeds before selecting your pet. Labrador Retrievers are the most popular dog in America. They are great with children and are easily trained. Golden Retrievers are very devoted dogs. They are good for people of all ages and are great if your family likes to hunt. German Shepherds are wonderful family dogs. They adore children and love to be active. Beagles are smart and gentle dogs. You will need to give them a lot of exercise though. Any of these dogs make a great choice for kids. Cats are also a good choice, although you will want to spend a little time with the cat to see how it reacts to children.
Want something smaller? Forget about the hamster or gerbil. A rat makes a much better pet because they love to be held. If rats are not your thing, try a guinea pig. They are one of the top pets for kids. They are easy to take care of and they love to be picked up. They will let your children hold them and they even purr! You will rarely have problems with them scratching or biting.
You will often see iguanas or turtles in pet stores and often someone will try to convince you that they make good pets for kids. The reality is that they are not good pets for kids at all. Iguanas can grow quite large and become aggressive as they get older. Turtles are hard to take care of and they are pretty boring for kids. The better choice is a leopard gecko. They like to be held and they are not hard to look after.
There are many other pets that are good for children as well. The thing to keep in mind is that you want to find the pet that fits your particular children. You will want to consider their personalities and what they hope to gain from pet ownership. Some kids will be happy just looking at a goldfish while others want a pony. You will just have to figure out what works for your family.

Behavior Dog Training
One ultimate objective for doing behavior dog training is to build a basis or foundation from which both of you can ascertain and discover how to effectively relate with each other. The first step on behavior dog training will focus on your pet’s obedience.
This is to establish a language between you and your dog. Let your puppy identify the correct and ideal behavior that you look forward to in return. You are probably doing some faultfinding errors on crate training but you don’t even realize it!
You can start measuring your dog’s obedience with the word SIT. This command is the most basic fundamental of behavior dog training. It’s the first language your dog could commonly learn and it is at the lowest level of all other language commands. Whatever the breed of the dog you own, this knowledge best applies to you and the effects will amaze you in all actual cases.
Shy and fearful traits of your dog represent their behavior. In order to overcome these distinguishing features, you can introduce your dog to someone they think strangers to them. By conquering the first awful acquaintance, you will be able to advance on presenting your shy dog to others.
By also teaching your dog how to greet visitors calmly, people will not be reluctant to enter your home. Visitor’s fears to get pounced and slobbered are being kept away if your dog loves to greet them.
Aside from saving your time and money, you’ll learn to escape the errors and terrible situations that you felt sensitive to. This behavior dog training will avoid placing you at high danger of a less satisfactory alliance with your dog. Discover everything to convert behavioral problems of your dog. The perfect part about proper dog training is if you can do it easily!

How To Train a Puppy to Pay Attention
Learning how to train a puppy can be incredibly difficult but infinitely rewarding as well. For many dog owners who want to learn how to train a puppy to potty outside or behave properly in the house, the greatest obstacle is getting the little canine’s attention. If you don’t have the puppy’s attention, then you obviously can’t train him to do anything. With that in mind, here are some tips on how to get your puppy’s attention for training.
Getting Started
When you learn how to train a puppy, you must first make sure that when there are other dogs around, he will pay attention to you. The best way to do that is to teach him to ignore the other dogs when the stage is yours. First, have some treats on you, but in a place where the puppy will be unable to see them. To start, say the pup’s name with authority and then move away quickly. This will teach the dog to look at you when you say his name.
The Next Step
Secondly, when learning how to train a puppy, you want to make sure you complete the sequence always. So, once the puppy has followed you praise him quickly and enthusiastically. As you do it, take out and give him a treat. Never show the treats until you are going to give him one. When you do give your puppy a treat, it is best to put the treat between his eyes and yours so that you get the eye contact. Eye contact with you is the goal, so always reward it.
Make it Stick
Finally, perform the sequence at least three to five times in a row. This is important to do when you learn how to train a puppy. Each time, say the puppy’s name, move, praise him, and then give him a treat with eye contact. By doing it several times in a row you are doing two things: one, you are making sure you hold the puppy’s attention for a few minutes consecutively and secondly you are imprinting the commands and behavior on your dog.
Learning how to train a puppy is a chore in and of itself. However, it can never happen if you don’t take the time to teach your puppy to pay attention to you around other dogs. By taking these simple tips and performing them daily, you will soon have your puppy’s full and undivided attention so that you can house train him, paper train him, or even add behaviors.
