Why We Don’t Train Our Dogs – 5 Of The Best Excuses
There are almost as many dog-training excuses as there are dog owners. Here are five of my particular favourites – not because they justify not training a dog, but because they show how poorly people understand dog training, and dog training methods.
1) I don’t want to break my dog’s spirit.
Many people cite examples of listless dogs or dogs that won’t do anything unless told. In 20 years of handling dogs, I don’t think I’ve ever met any of these mythical dogs – except where the dog has no stimulation at all, he will always be excited and pleased to be rewarded for doing what he’s told. This does not make a dog listless or unhappy – it gives him purpose and rewards thinking!
Beating a dog will break his spirit and make him afraid of doing wrong, but this is not training. Beating does not teach him obedience, it just teaches him fear. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that the dog cowering at the end of his lead as his owner shouts at him has been ‘trained’. Far from it. He has possibly been abused.
2) She’s such lovely dog: I wouldn’t change her for the world!
Lovely dogs are lovely despite not being trained, rather than because they’re not trained. Exceptionally lucky owners may have a lovely dog who doesn’t bark much, who avoid people who are afraid of them, who never chew things, and may not even pull at the lead. But dogs are pack animals, and need rules to live by, and a leader to look up to. Training will not change your lovely dog’s personality, but will help her to understand life, make her more content and an even better companion. Actually, most people who wouldn’t change anything put up with a lot of inconvenience to ‘keep their dog’s personality’.
3) I don’t have time to train him.
Why do we have dogs? A dog is a living, breathing, thinking being that needs stimulation, play, exercise and companionship. All of these needs can be answered through training, which strengthens the bond between us and our animals, giving us both what we need. Better still, the very activities that make our dogs the perfect pets are the best activities to use to train him. If you spend time with your dog, you have time to train him. If you don’t spend time with your dog, maybe it’s time to consider whether a dog is the best pet for you.
4) He’s only a puppy – I’ll train him when he’s older.
No, no, no, no! Would you wait for a child to go to school before teaching them to speak, or before potty training them? Dog training isn’t a chore for the puppy! Dog training is fun and fulfilling, and the training gives your puppy something to occupy their mind. Pet your puppy when she comes to you; make a fuss of her and give her titbits when she brings you a slipper, or a piece of paper off the floor! The more enthusiastic you are when she sits, the more she’ll love to sit for you. The more she loves coming to you for praise, the more likely she is to leave Mrs Smith’s cat alone when you call her. Train her now, or you may be paying for it for the rest of her life.
5) He’s well behaved anyway
The dog is a pack animal. A pack has a leader and followers of various importance. If you don’t take the responsibility of leadership, your dog may may feel he has to. This will be stressful for him and for you. If you don’t set the rules, your dog will, and you may not like them! Your dog should be a relaxing companion, not an adversary, a boss or a burden.

The Australian Shepherd Dog
The Australian Shepherd is a working sheep and farm dog that might do quite poorly in an apartment. They are vigorous dogs with high intelligence that were bred to think and work. They require at the least, a properly fenced in enclosure and at the best, a farm to run and work. They form strong bonds with their family and demand a great deal of attention and time. They will follow their master from room to room in a house and want to ride in the car, help with chores, etc. If left alone for long periods of time, they may invent their own entertainment which can include destroying the furnishings or garden. They need to be properly socialized with children and pets and may nip at the heels of children. She is a very protective dog of both body and property.
Approximate Adult Size
The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male Australian Shepherd is 20 to 23 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and from 50 to 65 pounds. The female should run about 18 to 21 inches to the withers and 40 to 55 pounds.
Special Health Considerations
Some heartworm medications may be toxic to this breed due to a gene mutation.. Your veterinarian can test for this. She can suffer from canine hip dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), hereditary eye problems, hypothyroidism (sluggish thyroid gland which can result in weight gain), discoid lupus erythematosus (an autoimmune disease), cleft palate, seizures, von Willebrand’s disease (a problem with blood clotting), and patent ductus arteriosis (a circulatory abnormality).
Grooming
Brush this breed often with a firm bristle brush and wash when necessary. She will shed quite a bit. Brushing will help keep your pets coat clean and healthy, help avoid tangles and help keep your house more free of shed hair. Brushing will also help you keep a closer eye on your pet health and strengthen your emotional bond with her. Her coat is of moderate length and medium coarseness. Be prepared to become real friendly with your vacuum cleaner if kept indoors. Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.
Life Span
The Australian Shepherd can live between 12 and 15 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.
History
The only working livestock breed actually developed in the western portion of America, although she does have some roots in Australia. She was developed from sheep dogs that were imported with flocks of sheep from Australia, France, Spain, New Zealand, Latin America and England during the late 1800 and early 1900 period, especially during the California gold rush. Australian Shepherds were popularized, especially in California, after World War II by horse shows, rodeos and movies.

West Highland White
History
Poltalloch, located in Scotland, which feeds directly into the Atlantic Ocean. It is more of an estate than a village, with about half a dozen houses scattered alongside the large estate of the Malcolm family. This is where Colonel Malcolm lived with his “Poltalloch Eleven” of Westie’s when he organized the official recognition of the Westie breed in 1905.
Feeding
So what do you feed young eat-a-lot, We all want what’s best for our Westie’s, but sometimes not all is what it seams.
Making sure your Westie has a well balanced diet can be a difficult task. Some people have convinced themselves that the tin or box of dog food, is just right for their dog.
The Domesticated dog in bygone days needed to forage for they’re food, it was not handed them on a plate. Dogs scavenged the land and when a meal was found it was in a raw state. Dog performed tasks for man and was rewarded for they’re help by sharing they’re food. As time progressed dogs became more and more domesticated and more dependent on humans for food.
Pets were fed human food, what ever the families had for dinner they’re pet had the same, there was no pet food available. In fact up until World War Two no pet food could be purchased, even if it was available who could afford to buy such a luxury item. Those families with dogs simply shared the table foods.
Breeding
As an guardian of a pedigree dog, you may have considered breeding your pet. Breeding Westie’s is not a hobby, it can be demanding, complicated and is not something the average home should dabble with. Many people have thought of breeding they’re Westie’s as a means of making money. Buy a male and female Westie and let them get on with it.
The beloved family pet is perhaps not the best candidate to continue the purebred strain of Westie’s. In fact there are some breeders who insist you have the dog spayed or nurtured. ? Consider the time and money involved just to get your Westie bitch into breeding condition and then to look after her throughout her pregnancy and afterwards while she looks after her young pups.
Dog Chews
Dog chews are mostly given as a treat, or a reward for doing something good. However there are some chews that are given to clean the teeth, or help with bad breath. When every you consider buying a chew, make sure it is suitable for a Westie, and not a general chew for larger dogs.
Fashion
No Self respecting Westie would be seen without all the latest accessories
Safety Collar, Leads, Harness, Coats, Beds, Identity disks, Accessories, DIY Coat, Reflective Jacket
Children
How are they around children ?
This is especially true of couples with small children or who plan to have children in the future. It can also be asked by grandparents who are about to acquire a dog. There is so much information and perhaps misinformation that is spread by word of mouth that it is certainly a valid question.
If you plan to have a Westie puppy, and have small children you should think about this carefully
.Dogs should never be left alone with children.
.Children should never be allowed to pull the dogs tail, or any other form of teasing.
.Feeding must be done away from children, let your dog have some peace.
.Children should not feed anything to the dog
.Children must be taught respect for the dog
.You must clear your garden up after your dog , don’t let children come in contact with dog mess.
.Never let a child walk your dog alone.
Grooming
Warning, Are your instruments clean?. Do you visit a professional to have your Westie groomed and clipped? Are they sterilizing the equipment? IF NOT WHY NOT ! Stop the spread of deadly diseases. Its a sad fact that many so called professionals do not clean the grooming tools after each dog. If the previous dog has some skin problem, this can quite easily be passed on you your Westie.
It is not necessary to have your Westie fully groomed regularly, if you continue to use thinning scissors and a quick trim, you can keep his coat reasonably short. Avoid having your Westie fully cut in winter time, they can quickly catch a cold. This job is best left to the hot summer months, when your Westie will appreciate the loss of some heat.
Note: Unlike the medieval Barber, who not only cut hair and gave shaves, but also practiced surgery and pulled teeth, You should not let a groomer do anything other than cut hair!. Some are setting them selves up as vet’s and performing other services like emptying anal glands. Don’t Let them !

Care for Rabbits in the Summer
Rabbits are very playful, fun, and intelligent creatures, and they’re adorable as well. If you’re a parent that was tempted (perhaps at Easter) to purchase a rabbit as a pet for your children, be aware that they require a great deal of care, and they are very sensitive creatures.
With summer heating up, be aware that rabbits are extremely sensitive to the heat, and if they don’t have a way to cool off, they can die. There are many ways, however, to help them cool down, if you have an outdoor bunny. One great way is to fill a 2 liter soda bottle with water, freeze it, and place it next to your bunny’s favorite resting spot. (Depending on how hot it is outside, you may need to change it every couple of hours.) Also, make sure to always have plenty of water available to your bunny, preferably in a dish. (Ceramic crocks work well since they’re tough for bunnies to knock over.) This way, they can put their feet or ears in the water, which is another way to help them cool off.
Bunnies are creatures of habit, so if you’re traveling with your bunny, make sure to have all of his or her favorite toys, treats, and food. Changing food can upset a bunny’s stomach, oftentimes causing diarrhea, which can quickly dehydrate a bunny (and can lead to death). Make sure to keep the routine as close to normal as possible, and this will help your bunny travel.
Another thing to keep in mind: never EVER leave your bunny in a car. On an 80 degree day, within just a few minutes, the car can heat up to over 120 degrees. Keep your bunny safe – if you go to a restaurant, make sure it’s pet friendly. It doesn’t take long for animals to overheat with temperatures like that.
Use common sense when taking care of your pet, and remember that with a thick fur coat, bunnies don’t do well in heat at all. If you have an outdoor bunny, take the necessary precautions to keep your bunny healthy and happy. Take care of your pet, and you’ll be able to enjoy his or her companionship for 12 years or more.
Sophie loves animals, especially bunnies, and has spent years caring for them. She enjoys spending her time reading about animals, and learning new

The Benefits of a Lighted Dog Collar
There are few things in this world that can replace the happiness that your dog can give you. They can comfort you when you’re sad or sick and they will never abandon you, no matter what type of person you may be. A pet is one of the most loyal and loving friends that you can ever find and as a result, you want the best for them. You would want to ensure the safety and well being of your dog and one of the best devices that can do that is a lighted dog collar.
As its name indicates, this device is a dog collar that is visible in the pitch black black of night. It is made out of a glow-in-the-dark material that allows it to be useful in many situations. A light dog collar is perfect for dogs trained in K9 law enforcement, search and rescue, and is highly recommended by trainers and veterinarians.
Since they are illuminated, these collars are guaranteed to keep your dog safe. Dogs can be smart in figuring out how to slip out of the house. If your house is located near a road or in the city, there is a real possibility that a car may hit your dog, especially if it’s nighttime. A lighted dog collar is bright enough to enable a driver to see and avoid hitting your beloved dg.
You can find a lighted dog collar in your local pet store or on online pet websites. The cost of this device will vary depending on the brand, color, style, and size that you choose for your dog. Accidents can happen any time, so it is certainly a safe and smart purchase.
Aside from safety, this pet gadget also offers you the benefit of identification. A lighted dog collar is not only good for hooking tags on your dog; they can also serve as a description that you can use in case your dog gets lost. They are noticeable enough for people to recall, if they happen to have seen your pooch. This is very valuable, especially if your dog is a mixed breed because mixes are tough to describe.
You can also choose a unique collar design for your dog. You can buy a lighted dog collar that has bones around the strip or you can purchase one with a paw print design. This enables you to give your dog a cute or innocent look. Even if style and fashion are not important assets of a dog, they can surely make you smile. But more importantly, the security and safety that a lighted dog collar provides makes everything else just a bonus.

How To Treat A Kitten Old About 2-4 Weeks
A young kitten can eat only milk. But if you have to feed it by yourself, you have to find some tools to help you feed them. You must find a small Syringe [size about 1 ml.] you can find in pets shop or Pharmacy. Why I suggest you to use the smallest Syringe, because it’s will help you feed milk to them very slowly, very young kitten need to eat slowly, if they eat to fast they will get choke. About milk, you must find a kitten dried milk. You can buy from pet shop. e
But please remember this phrase “Don’t feed them by normal milk, cow milk”. I refer Goat milk, because it easy to find. And mix goat milk with water by 1 milk with ½-1 water. After try milk, you can start try to feed him by liquid food for kitten. If they can eat you can give them both between milk and liquid food. But about liquid food don’t give them too much, because kitten digests system is still very new and can’t take on a lot of food. And after their meal you must watch them to see when they go to stool. If they didn’t do that may be they have some problem about suffer from constipation. If this problem happens you should mix more water with milk, but if they still continued had this problem. You must take him to see vetrinarian.
And still have other things to be careful. First things is, Do not bathing them even you get him from a dirty dustbin or every dirty place. All you can do is clean them by using a wet fabric to wipe their body, and after that use dry fabric to wipe them too. And second thing is if weather is cold, you need to give them warm. Because if these kitten stay with their mom. Their mom will make them warm enough to survive. All you need is a standard lamp, it can help kitten to feel warmer. Place it high about 1-1.5 meter and shine into a kitten basket. You can open about 2 hours and after that turn off about 1 hour in the night, continued doing this can help kitten fell warmer and good for their health. But if kitten got illness, absolutely don’t warm them by lamp. And a last thing is, if your kitten got illness please brings him to see veterinarian instantly. Don’t use human medicine with kitten, it can kill them.

Dogs and Cats: Neuter Or Not?
So you are deciding to neuter your dog or cat. What are the advantages and disadvantages? Also, what will happen from going ahead with the operation?
When you search the Internet, you are rarely shown both sides. In fact, aside from a few instances of poor health (making surgery risky), or wanting the pet to reproduce (for example, a show dog or cat), there are very few reasons to avoid neutering your pet.
Studies have shown there are solid advantages to neutering. In the case of females, spaying the cat or dog by 6 months (or the first heat), greatly decreases the probability of breast cancer later in life. Breast cancer has a high mortality rate, with 50 percent for dogs, 90 percent for cats, so early prevention is important. As well, the risk of uterine cancer in dogs and cats also increases, unless spaying is performed early on.
Neutering your pet can prevent problems in the home. While in heat, cats and dogs can make messes with discharges or spraying, can experience behavioral issues, can upset people with noise and mating activities, and really are an annoyance. Neutering makes this behavior cease, making the pet more even-tempered.
Evidence that neutering is effective but safe is that the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals actually neuters all older cats and dogs that are adopted. Many concerns for cat or dog neutering are because of our feelings on the topic. What seems to be major surgery for us is not the same to our dogs and cats. And while there’s the biological instinct to breed in all creatures, there seems to be no problems when it is prevented.
Neutering helps decrease the dog and cat population. While kittens and puppies are cute, few are willing to care for a full litter. These animals must go some place, and so are set ‘free’ or put in shelters, looking at an early death. Unwanted pets also result in more homeless cats and dogs, with increased problems in urban areas. The life of a semi-wild former pet is not good, and so neutering prevents any dog or cat from ending up like that.
Neutering may be performed early, at about six months. The procedure can be an overnight event or for the same day (dependent on the veterinarian’s policy), and there may need to be a second trip to remove any stitches. Talk to your vet for further instructions.
While we may view the neutering of a cat or dog with a little concern, it is a loving thing to do for your cat or dog, enabling them to have an improved life, and likely a longer one.

3 Easy Steps To Stop Your Dog From Becoming Obese
What’s the old saying? Given enough time, the owner will look like their pet or is it a pet will look like the owner? Whichever it is dogs around the world are steadily becoming obese due to lack of exercise and over consumption. This not only affects their quality of life as a dog, but the extra body weight causes heart problems, leads to joint deterioration, shortens their lives and sometimes influences their behavior.
There are a few different ways you determine if your dog is obese by examining his or her body. For instance, place your pet between your legs in a standing position and look to see if his or her body slopes inward at the waist. Next, run your hands over their sides, from the front to back and see if you can easily feel their rib cage. Feel the base of their tail and determine if the bones are easily detectable. Or is there a mass of fat hiding there. Last but not least, view your dog’s profile and see if his tummy is drooping, and he has a swayback.
Did your pet pass these tests? Could you feel their rib cage? Did their body slope in at their hips and were you able to feel their tailbone? If you answered no to these questions, your dog is probably obese. This is not the end of the world. There are things you can do to help get your puppy back on track to a fit and trim life. After all, a healthy hound is a happy hound. There are just two simple rules to getting your puppy back on track: more exercise and less food.
If you’re not doing it already buy a plastic measuring cup for scoop and measure how much food you are feeding your dog every day. Consult your veterinarian on the recommended daily amounts. Get your dog on a meal schedule and stick to it. If your dog is used to eating twice a day, divide the amount of food they are to have in two to portions and feed one in the morning and one of the evening. Never let your dog eat at a constant supply of food. If you are doing this, stop immediately so that they cannot access it. Keep in mind putting your dog on a diet is like you going on a diet. Your pet is used to having food all the time and will probably be begging each time you sit down to dinner table. Remember, you have to be disciplined and not feed your pet table scraps.
The second thing you can do is exercise, and we all know that’s a lot easier said than done, because that requires your participation. The simplest thing is to get the leash and go for a walk. If you couldn’t justify spending an hour every day, walking with your pet. Not only would your pet realize almost instant results, but also so would you. If you don’t have the time, drag those kids away from the TV and kick him out the door with leash in hand. If you have time to go to the park to play frisbee or maybe toss the ball. Set aside some time to go out in the backyard and throw the ball. There might not be as much space as the park but at least your dog will be exercising and increasing their life span.
Just remember the right diet and exercise for your pet dog will increase their life and make them feel better. But most of all, they will be more dedicated to you; because of the time you’re spending with them.
You need to be strict when it comes to the amount of

How To Save Money By Testing For Feline UTI Yourself
Do you want to save money, anxiety for your kitty, and unnecessary trips to your vet? Would you like to know if your cat is developing crystals in her urine that could lead to a feline UTI?
It’s easy to do with this check-at-home method.
If your kitty has been previously diagnosed with a feline UTI, there’s a chance it could re-occur. Since it’s impossible to see the crystals in your cat’s urine that are caused by a UTI, you don’t know kitty’s hurting again until the UTI is fairly well advanced. And then how do you tell?
Poor kitty probably stops using the cat litter box – again.
Well, there’s an easy method to check kitty’s urine at home, with a minimum of fuss. You can check as often as you like, and it’s easy to see the test results – you don’t need any training.
Here’s how:
First off, you’ll need either non-absorbent litter (available from your vet) or clean acquarium gravel that’s available at any local pet store.
Next, you’ll need urine pH test strips.
Then, set up kitty in a room of her own with food, water, a clean litter box (scrubbed clean, not just litter-dumped-out clean) with the non-absorbent litter or acquarium gravel. You might also add some of her favorite toys, a kitty DVD, or just turn on a radio tuned to a classical music station, with the volume set low.
This testing is even easier when you know the approximate times of the day or night your cat uses the litter box. You may need to observe your cat for a few days to figure this out. Scout usually goes around 4:30 AM, or 5:00 PM. There’s probably other times, but these are the two most convenient times for me to grab a fresh sample from her.
Give kitty time to give you a sample in the box. Check often, to make sure you get fresh cat urine. Why? Fresh cat urine will give you the most accurate pH reading. The older the urine, the higher the pH reading will be…you’ll think kitty has a problem, when she may not.
Dip the urine pH test strip into kitty’s urine, and GENTLY shake the excess off, over the cat litter box. Hold the wet end up, wait one minute, and compare it to the chart that comes with the urine pH test strip kit.
A normal reading is 6.4 – 6.6. If it’s any lower or higher, please contact your vet as soon as possible for more information.
I test my cat Scout monthly. Since I’ve begun using this method, I no longer have to guess if the changes in her diet and lifestyle are working to prevent future UTI occurences. I know for certain, based on the urine sample test reading.
What could be easier? You:
- Can test kitty at home, at your leisure, and hers.
- Don’t have to schedule a vet visit.
- Can easily read the test results quickly.
- Will know if an appointment with kitty’s vet is necessary or not.
Remember, this testing will tell you that a recurring UTI is possible – it’s NOT definitive. For confirmation, you will need to take your cat the vet.
Good luck, and happy testing!

The first and the foremost thing to teach your new puppy is that human flesh is much more sensitive than other puppies and that it really hurts us when they bite. This is called bite inhibition. A puppy has very sharp teeth and a weak jaw. This means that the puppy can cause you to be uncomfortable when mouthing or puppy biting you, but cannot cause severe damage. An adult dog has duller teeth and a powerful jaw. This means that an adult dog can cause significant damage when biting.
• Make your Dog understand why you are correcting Him
• Praise your Dog so that your praise has meaning and your Dog must understand praise
• Stop your Dog jumping on you.
• No “violence.” No hitting. No abuse. With your Dog and don’t put up with any such kind of nonsense, and never should you.
