BARF Natural Diet-Is It The Healthiest Option For My Beloved Cat?
BARF diet also known as biologically appropriate raw food, bones and raw food and born again raw food is a diet program for felines. The foundation of this diet is base on the belief that bones and raw food are the closest form of food cat cats eat in the wild, and should be best for feline health.
Supporters of the BARF diet claim that cats would be healthier feeding a raw diet. Suggesting that cats feeding on commercial food would be detrimental to their health as proven in many studies done across the country because the cooking process destroy many essential nutrients that cats would require.
While those that were in favor of the cook diet argue on the fact that raw food can carry bacteria that causes food borne diseases and that alone far more outweigh the benefits that a raw diet could bring along. Critics also say that raw bone shards can break teeth and perforate the intestinal tract. With all said, both sides still has problems coming out with concrete evidences to proof their claims.
An example of such research was done by Lisa Freeman, DVM, and Kathryn Michel, DVM, publish in the journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, March 2001. It was done by evaluating five dog food diets, 3 homemade and 2 commercial. Studies show that raw diets lacked phosphorus and potassium and had high levels of zinc, and all these elements, added together are a big concern when feeding puppies. In addition to that, one homemade diet shows presence of E. coli 0157:H7, a well known cancer causing bacteria to humans.
On the other hand, the Pottenger Cat Studies, conducted between 1932 and 1942, found that cats that were feed a raw food diet which consist of raw meat, bones, raw milk and cod-liver oil, outlived and out-reproduced their peers that were fed a cooked diet. And surprising, the study also found that cats that were fed a cooked diet had problems to reproduce after several generations. And this condition improves only when they change the diet back to the raw diet.
There are also critics of the Pottenger study, and they cite the fact that no one knows for certain what aspect of the raw food diet actually affected the health of the animals, whether it was raw meat, raw milk or cod-liver oil. They also note that the study has yet to be reproduced to determine scientific merit.
Even Ann Martin, the author who took on the commercial pet food industry, calling them to task for the unhealthy ingredients used in pet food, does not support the raw food diet. In a Better Nutrition article, June 2005, she notes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had found that a high percentage of raw meat contains at least one form of bacteria. She quotes a veterinarian who explains that certainly it was normal in the wild for wolves to eat raw meat, but it was also normal for wolves to occasionally die of salmonella poisoning.
She describes a study in the Journal of the American Animal Health Hospital Association that showed that two cats became sickened by salmonella in raw food that led to their deaths and that the bacterial cultures of the cats and the meat were identical.
Although there are many examples of cats living a healthier and longer life on a raw diet, there are no clear evident to proof the benefits of the raw diet, and how much, if any bacteria, can be destroyed by the cat’s stomach acids. If you are considering changing your cat’s diet, it is recommended to talk to your veterinarian first.

Naming Your Male Dog
If you just got a new male puppy, you are probably agonizing over finding just the right name for him, just like an expectant parent trying to name your new baby. We tend to put a lot of effort and thought into picking a name for our dogs, one that is pleasing to the ear, and one we won’t be embarrassed yelling in public. I’d much rather call out “Buddy, come,” at the dog park than “Stay, Slobberchops,” wouldn’t you? By some accounts, you’ll be saying your dog’s name at least 35,000 times over the life of your pet, so you’ll want to choose one that you’ll be happy long after the fad “male dog name of the year” fades away.
One idea is to name your dog after a famous male that you like or can relate to, either in history, movies, or pop culture. For example, take the name “Duke.” Famous people named Duke include legendary jazz pianist Duke Ellington. Duke was also the name of ultimate movie tough guy John Wayne. And for TV trivia buffs, it was the name of the hound dog in the TV show “The Beverly Hillbillies.”
You could also name your dog after a personality trait. Is he constantly bumping into things and knocking them over? Perhaps “Buster” would be a good name. If he is strong and playful, “Rocky” might be a good fit. Is he always stealing your socks? “Bandit” may be just the right name for him.
Others like to name their dog after their favorite alcoholic beverage, like “Bud” or “Buddy” or car “Beemer,” or athlete “Jordan.” (Funny how this always seems to work better for male dog names versus girl dogs.)
It may be interesting to pick a male dog name based on the meaning of the name and how it relates to your dog. “Beauregard,” for instance, means “handsome face.” The name “Liam” means determined protector. And who can forget “Frodo,” from the Lord of the Rings, for your loyal male furry friend.
Choosing a foreign name reflecting your dog’s heritage is another option. For example, if you have an Old English Sheepdog, you could name your dog using a traditional English name such as Addison, Barclay or Grover. If you have a Scottish Terrier, then “Tavis” or “Finley,” both good Scottish names, may be appropriate.
You may like a name that has a humorous twist. If your dog is a little on the chubby side, “Gordito” might suit him. A little irony might also be fun. What about “Botox” for a Shar-pei (which has naturally wrinkled skin from head to tail). But be careful here: what may be topical at the moment might be passé in a few years (think of all those little girl babies named Britney).
Whatever name you choose, keep a few things in mind:
Dog names should be short, preferably one or two syllables. It’s easier for you to call out and easier for your dog to understand.
Dog names should not sound similar to commands. “Joe” sounds too close to “no,” for example. This can create confusion for your dog.
Dog names should not sound like any other name within the family or there will be lots of mix-ups.
Will that cute, exotic name or trendy for your puppy still suit your male dog after he is all grown up?

The Most Important Exercise for Multiple Dog or Puppy Owners – Part I
If you have more than one dog or puppy living under your roof, then this is one of the most important and useful exercises you can teach. Without this exercise (or something very similar), one of your dogs will probably learn to bully the other dogs out of the way for attention or food. This exercise lays the foundation for happy, well-mannered multiple dog homes.
What we’re going to do is teach each of our dogs to stay on a Mat while we pay attention to, groom or feed one of our other dogs. The mat gives our dogs a clear place to go to and a boundary to stay within. If we have multiple dogs we can send each dog to their own individual mats. This removes any confusion about what our dogs are to do, and removes the need to place our dogs in position. If you have several dogs, it could be quite time consuming to place a number of dogs.
To start with, teach each dog individually to “Go to Mat”. A “Mat” is either a dog bed you can easily move around, or something as simple as a towel on the floor. We’ll just call it a “mat” from now on.
It’s always easiest to teach a new behavior in the lowest distraction environment you can find. For most people, this means finding a boring room such as the bathroom, and locking your other dogs out while you work with one dog at a time.
Have a bowl or bag of small, tasty treats, your mat, a clicker, and a dog who hasn’t eaten a meal yet today. If you don’t own a clicker, you can substitute with verbal praise, but make it short, sweet and consistent; e.g “good!” or “Yes!”
Full instructions for training “Go to Mat” can be found dragonflyllama.com/ DOGS/Levels/LevelBehaviours/TL9GoToMat.html here.
Train each of your dogs, one at a time, to Level 3 with a full 1 minute stay according to the instructions given. Practise it in different rooms of the house, and maybe even out in your yard.
Stay tuned for Part II, where we’ll learn how to teach our dogs to go to their mats as a group.

Home Remedies For Dog Constipation
There comes a time in everyone’s life when constipation rears its ugly head. The same holds true for dogs, unfortunately. Lack of exercise and proper diet can lead to bouts of constipation (sound familiar?). While you may seek a variety of ways to “eliminate” this problem in your own life, let’s explore some home remedies for dog constipation which can be utilized in the eventuality it occurs in theirs.
As mentioned earlier, a proper diet and exercise are key components in ensuring your dog has the ability to move his bowels as often as necessary. House dogs usually need to be walked twice a day while maintaining a proper diet. If your dog becomes constipated, one method to alleviate this problem is by adding one to two teaspoons of bran to his meal. This allows for extra moisture in the stool.
Another method to soften the stool would be to add psyllium (Metamucil in the adult world) to his diet. Half a teaspoon twice a day, in addition to drinking plenty of water, will suffice. A third option would be mineral oil. This may be used in cases where there is a large build-up of hard stool. Two teaspoons, twice a day should be added to his meal, but for only a week. There are several other steps you can take to alleviate your dog’s constipation. Keep his food moist by adding a bit of water. If your dog is getting on in years, add some raw meat and vegetables to his diet.
There are certain signs which can alert you to potential problems, and for which you can take immediate steps. Long hair on dogs can cause feces to become entangled; therefore, keep your dog properly groomed. Dogs tend to eat everything in sight, ensure no bones or other material has been ingested. Just as we experience constipation due to certain medications, dogs are no exception. Psychological stress is another indicator relating to constipation.
While it has been suggested that all breeds and dogs of any age are prone to constipation, there are other aspects which you may need to consider, and for which many dog owners are culpable. Never feed your dog from the dinner table. While you may indulge the dog with a few scraps here and there, you are contributing to his constipation.
Foods that contain flour, sugar, rice, dairy and high protein are the main source of the problem. Ice cream, cookies, bread, chocolate, or other unhealthy food items can cause your dog unnecessary pain. As mentioned earlier, a lack of fiber and dehydration are common causes. Another cause for concern would be a condition known as mega colon. This simply means your dog has an inflamed colon which prevents the discharge of feces.
The time to visit the vet will become evident when your dog’s inability to defecate is hampered by a decreased appetite, passing blood in minimal amounts, and overall lethargy. Keep in mind, contributing to the overall health of your dog should be of the utmost importance. A dog’s love is unconditional, therefore, he or she is totally dependent upon you to maintain a healthy and harmonious life. Be ever vigilant to any signs of stress and ensure his diet and exercise regimen is appropriate and on-going.

The Do’s and Don’t of Puppy Potty Training
Like most new pet owners, I’m sure that you are dreading potty training your puppy. Potty training is the first step that needs to be mastered, when you undertake the grueling task of training your puppy. It is very important for your puppy master this skill at an early age. Crate training is a very effective way to housebreak your puppy. Unfortunately most, people misunderstand the appropriate method of crate training, and the benefits that it will bring you. Your dog will view the crate as his space, his refuge, and his retreat from the strange world of humans.
Before you undertake this important training exercise, you need to consider the size of the crate that you are going to buy. The crate should be big enough to hold your puppy until he reaches his full size. However, you should also keep in mind that if the crate is to large your puppy might want to take care of his business in the end of the crate that is not being occupied. Some of crate manufactures have crates with divider panels, that will allow you can expand the size of the crate as your dog begins to fully develop.
Night time crate training can prove to be a very difficult and daunting task at first, but don’t worry. When you are potty training puppies, they will probably relive themselves when they see you in the morning. Don’t get frustrated! Puppies have a very difficult time holding their bladder until they are about 9 months old.
Even though crate training is a great way of housebreak your puppy, you shouldn’t leave your dog confined in such a small area for long periods time. If your job permits, you should go home during your lunch hour and allow your puppy to relive himself. If this is not an option for you, their are pet services that will do this for you. It is not healthy for your pet to hold his bladder all day long. This can cause serious bladder, or kidney problems latter on in your puppies life.
When ever you are at home you should leave the door on the crate open, when your puppy is not being confined. By doing this not only are you house breaking your puppy, you are also creating a save haven for your puppy to retreat to, along with a comfortable sleeping area.
Whenever an accident happens in the House (and believe me they will) don’t use crate to punish your dog. If your dog does relives himself in the house, take the dog and put his nose down to the mess, and not in it. Then in a stern but firm voice scold the dog and take him directly outside. You should avoid yelling, or screaming no to your dog at all costs. Screaming, or yelling no at your puppy will cause your puppy to associate going to bathroom with doing something wrong. When your puppy dose go to the bathroom outside, praise him and give him a treat. This will reinforce what you are teaching your puppy, and he will learn that he is doing a good thing.
Don’t forget that it is very important to keep your puppies crate clean. Even though the crate is your puppies space, there are going to be some jobs that you are going to have to perform on your best friends behalf. By regular cleaning and disinfecting your puppies crate you will be protecting him from germs that could cause an illness, as well as unwanted smells.

Dogs and Ear Problems
No matter how much extra effort we exert in keeping our dogs clean most of the time with regular hygiene, there will come a point when they will contract ear infections especially if we neglect their ears. Your dog’s ears require your careful attention as well because some dog breeds have ears that are structured to be prone to ear problems. It is important that we address this problem to avoid untoward accidents of dog’s getting aggressive or biting their masters because they were not aware of their pets suffering from excruciating pain because of the ear problem. Usually these ear infections are mild and occur in the outer portion of the ear.
Signs that your dog is having an ear infection…
There are tell tale signs that your dog may be experiencing any ear irritation. You may observe that your dog frequently scratches his ears, rubs them against the carpet or your furniture. Your dog may also tilt or hold its head consistently towards one side or may shake it profusely most of the time. You may also notice some swelling or redness on your dog’s ears. For other dogs, they may experience discharges that could range in color from yellow to brown and even black. Quite often, when your dog has ear infections, you may detect a foul smell. For those pooches that are quite unlucky, they have abnormally structured ear canals that make them prone to contracting ear infections.
Possible causes…
A common cause of ear infections is allergies. The dog may be allergic to a particular food, medication or shampoo. The ear infection is an off shoot of the allergy. Water getting into the ears could also be another reason for having ear infections. If your dog enjoys swimming a lot, it may be prone to getting ear related problems. It is important that you dry your dog’s ears after every swim or bath to help prevent irritations and infections. Other causes may be due to ear wax build up, improper clean up of the ears especially with the utilization of cotton swabs or tips that often push debris further inside the ear, existence of ear mites and hair growth inside the ears.
Home remedies…
If your dog’s ear infection is caused by a yeast infection as evidenced by the existence of pink brownish wax, you may clean your dog’s ears with acetic acid or white vinegar. A mixture of the herb pau d’arco with mineral oil helps kill bacteria and fungi inside your dog’s ears as well. Giving your pet also a dose of vitamin C can help alleviate the inflammation inside your dog’s ears when it is experiencing ear infections. Remove also unwanted hair growth inside your dog’s ears. If you are not too familiar or too sure on how to go about this without irritating your dog, you can seek the help of your vet or a dog groomer.
Visit your vet
It is advisable to always seek the help of your pet doctor to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment for your dog’s ear infection. Usually your vet may recommend antifungal medication, antibiotics or other medication which can either be topical or oral. Surgery is always a last resort.

Online Pets Supply Tips And Considerations For Our Kids, I Mean Our Pets Of Course
Most of us love to fill our homes with pets. In no time they become just like a member of the family and your home turns out to be their home too. Your pet is just like a baby who needs to be cleaned, fed, and looked after. But do you know what food and other pet supplies to buy for your pet?
Pet supplies have become a massive multi billion dollar market in the last 50 years with pet stores abounding, including a vast, ‘online pet supply store’ market. However, be careful while buying any pet supplies. Whether your pet is a dog, cat, fish, bird or any type of pet. They all need proper care and attention. So with that said, a huge factor to help narrow down where to shop, whether online or down the street, is to find knowledgeable providers of all your pet supply needs.
Here are some basic things to take into consideration regarding the supplies your pet may or may not enjoy.
Yummy Pet Food:
Where diet supplies are concerned, it is advised to use natural diets, that are preservative and chemical free with quality vitamins and nutrients. Using natural diet supplies will minimize the probability of any health problems like allergies and digestive disorders, keeping your pet healthy and in high spirits. Using natural diet supplies also helps your pet to live longer. Consult with your veteranarian for precise requirements for you exact pet. Afford them with their own bowl to eat food and drink water too.
Pet Sleeping Desires:
Pets such as dogs and cats like cozy comfortable places to lie down and call their own. So why not afford them with their own cat bed or dog bed? Take some time to do some research into pet beds. One may be cheaper, but the one that costs more is usually better constructed for the long run, easier to keep clean and the best for your pets comfort. I’ve found my own pets like to be up off the floor so cat perches and a pet bed off the floor may get used more frequently than the simple ones on the floor.
Pet Grooming:
Your pets grooming is also very important and the right supplies are a must. For example a dull nail clipper could cause pain and discomfort when trimming nails. Grooming not only helps your pets overall look, but helps prevent disease and promotes overall health. Just like we like to go to the salon for a hair cut most pet’s enjoy the extra attention of a day at the salon too.
Yes, Pet Clothing:
Clothing your pet can be a lot of fun, but it can also be practical. Dog shoes for example, can protect your dogs feet from some harsh climates. Certain breeds have more sensitive pads on their feet and can be more prone to freezing. Look for a shoe that has a reputation for staying on well as some can slip off easily. Sweaters and are variety of other garments have now been made for pets as well. Much of which you might find unpractical and mostly for show. For example the little pink leather jacket for a small dog like a chiwowa.
Get Help With Pet Supplies:
Purchasing supplies like toys, tags, grooming supplies, even clothing can be less overwhelming to decide upon when talking to knowledgeable staff from your local pet shop or well written advice from an online pet supply store.
These pet supplies can either be bought from any pet supply store or through an online pets supply website. Take some time and do some research for the products your looking for. Also, do a search online for a wholesale pet supply business. You never know untill you look but there’s a really good chance you’ll find some superb deals out there.
With such a competivive market, you are very likely to not only find useful product information for pet supplies, but also find an affordable price range for your supplies so that each one of you can enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. Above all enjoy your pet, their for having fun with and getting away from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives.

Guideline For Choosing Dog Treats
What makes you love your dogs? Is it because of the way he loves you in return and the eagerness that you feel when he attempts to please? This love can be more emphasized through dog training as it creates the firm bond between you and your pal.
One well recognized method of dog training is through the use of dog treats. But dog treats are not for positive reinforcement dog training alone. Most dog owners have used them as snack alternatives. This does not proceed pleasurable experiences but may also aid in maintaining your pal’s health.
Like with other pet stuffs, there are considerations that an owner should first evaluate before allowing his pet to dog treats. Health components concerning with calorie content is on the priority list.
One of the growing concerns on dog health nowadays is obesity. Almost half of American dogs are overweight. Like with the case of human, obesity may lead to a variety of diseases like diabetes, heart disease and arthritis.
Overindulgence is thought as one of the contributing reason for obesity. This may be due to human factor. Most owners tend to give dog treats on an unregulated basis. For most, it doesn’t matter how many calories does a single biscuit may contain. To resolve this issue, an owner needs to cut back on the daily calorie intake of his pet until he reduces some weight. Controlling the quantity of dog treats throughout the day may be of great help. You may also choose to lessen his foods gradually until he reaches normal weight. In line with this, it is ideal to stick with dog treats with low calories. The subject on obesity may further be resolved through consulting the vet and to implement a regular exercise regimen.
It is also an ill practice to give your dog commercially produced human foods. Some of which may contain elements that are not suited for your dog’s health. Commercial foods are also often rich with fats and calories and low in nutrients and vitamins. Moreover, this practice is really not healthy for your dog’s manners. This only encourages begging. Give him his dog treats in his own place instead but always bearing the thought of how healthy the dog treats you give are.
Tips on Dog Treats Selection
It is always best to buy naturally produced dog treats. These save you from unnecessary additives that may post threats against your dog’s health. Fat and sugar-rich dog treats are complete no-no. look for dog treats that have high concentration of fibers and protein.
Dog treats that are primarily made from fishes are good sources of unadulterated health components. These are great foods for human as well as dogs. They are low in calories and fats.
Avoid giving dog treats before any major meals. If you are training him using positive reinforcement, cut back portions of his meals to balance his diet with dog treats.
There are dog treats that are especially made to optimize your dog’s health. Working in the same principle as that of the vitamin supplements. These are aids to maintain your dog’s health and may even relieve symptoms of certain diseases.
Don’t allow that dog treats may cover as much as ten percent of your pet’s diet.
In choosing the ideal treat, it is helpful to rely on your best judgements. It is you who know your pet well enough but in cases of doubt, you may as well consult a veterinarian.

Puppies and Dogs Need To Chew
Did you know that even the adult dog has a desire to chew? Puppies and young dogs need something with resistance to chew on while their teeth and jaws are developing. Some of the reasons why a puppy or young dog needs to chew are:
· for cutting the puppy teeth
· to induce growth of the permanent teeth under the puppy teeth
· to assist in getting rid of the puppy teeth
· to help the permanent teeth to come through the gums
· to assure normal jaw development and
· to settle the permanent teeth solidly in the jaws.
The adult dog’s desire to chew stems from the instinct for tooth cleaning, gum message and jaw exercise…. plus the need to vent periodic doggie tensions. Tartar accumulates on the teeth of dogs, particularly at the gum line. This accumulation, if not removed, brings irritation and then infection, which will erode the tooth enamel and ultimately destroy the teeth at the roots. Tooth and jaw development normally continues until the dog is more than a year old. Depending upon the dog, chewing exercise, the rate at which calcium can be utilized and many other factors.
Dogs, especially puppies and young dogs, will often destroy valuable property when their chewing instinct is not diverted from their owner’s possessions. (Our dog Nikki chewed on the coffee table, spa cover and other items. This can be an expensive way to learn a lesson.) That is why it is important for you to provide something for chewing that is safe and desirable for your dog.
The ever-popular nylon Nylabone products have been designed as therapeutic devices to vent your puppy’s/dog’s frustration. They are like pacifiers and satisfy your dog’s need to chew. They also aid in tooth and jaw development in puppies.
Gumabones, made of soft polymer, were created specifically for dogs whose teeth are too soft to chew nylon Nylabone chews. The Gumabone products are practically indestructible and they can be boiled to remove harmful germs. Make sure you replace the Gumabone when the knuckle has worn down.
The all-natural Quest dental chews are completely edible. The irresistible taste encourages chewing and the various shapes will encourage good oral health and fresh breath.
Nothing, however, substitutes for periodic professional attention to your dog’s teeth and gums. Have your dog’s teeth cleaned by your veterinarian at least once a year and he will be healthier and happier.

House Training a Puppy Is Absolutely Vital If Your Puppy Spends Time Indoors
While there is no fool proof method for house training a puppy, crate training has proven successful for many. There is nothing more fun than bringing home a new puppy; for everyone except the person responsible for cleaning up after it!
This process effectively teaches the puppy to ‘hold it’ until given the opportunity to relieve himself somewhere more suitable. However, this method is not an excuse to ‘shelve’ you new puppy for long periods of time.
This method of house training a puppy is based on the premise that puppies would rather not mess up their living area if they don’t have to. Puppies should NOT be left in the crate for too long. If your puppy goes to the bathroom in the crate because he could no longer hold it, the training process will be drastically compromised.
How do I handle house training a puppy in this manner?
If no one is in your home during the day, you should put the puppy in a bathroom or another small, uncarpeted area in your home that can be closed off. House training a puppy should take place only when you are at home. When you arrive home, take the pup out on a leash.
After you play with him for a while put him in the crate. Wait an hour or so and then take him out again. If he relieves himself, shower him with praise. If he doesn’t, put him back in the crate and try again about 45 minutes later. This process should be repeated until he is successful.
After he goes to the bathroom he should be allowed to play free in the house. Some people find it helpful to keep a diary of the times their puppy goes. While this may seem bizarre, it helps you to determine your puppy’s habits enabling you to decrease the time he has to spend in the crate.
The most important thing to remember with house training a puppy is to be consistent and offer an enormous amount of praise. The process may take a while and it is important to understand that if the puppy has an accident during the training it is OK, you should just increase the frequency of trips outside.
If the puppy has an accident after his training has stopped, don’t punish him, just revert back to the training process temporarily and you will be back on track in no time.
