Dog Halloween Costumes are Safe Dog Clothes, Right?

Usually, when an owner buys festive dog clothing like a Halloween costume, there’s an expectation that it’s going to be safe for walking outside with car traffic or dealing with extra cold weather. Sadly, this is not always the case. Just like human costumes, dog Halloween outfits are sometimes made strictly for looks with no regard to safety features. This is fine if you and your pooch are just going to a party or staying at home to greet those that are trick-or-treating in your neighborhood. However, many events around this fall festival do happen outside, where extra measures need to be taken, especially if your dog is a smaller breed. Your canine needs to be visible and warm to stay safe this Halloween as well as all the holidays that follow.

Visibility for a dog is important, whether you’re talking about car traffic or foot traffic for small dogs, like Chihuahuas or Min Pins. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the apparel has to have a reflective strip or shiny fabric on it, but make sure that at least there are bright colors on the costume. Pumpkin pooch costumes are a good general outfit for October 31st because their, simple, cute and have bright orange and green colors. Tiny dogs won’t have to worry about getting stepped on in a crowded gathering dressed up like that. This is also true of car traffic. Anything that will make them stand out more in car lights is going to increase their safety. Of course, they should always have a collar and leash on when not in a contained area.

Often, when the ghosts and goblins come out, so does the chilly weather. At a fun occasion such as this, a regular dog coat, jacket or sweater just won’t do, but a costume still needs to keep a doggie just as warm. Many holiday outfits do come in the form of sweaters or jackets, so if you know your furry baby is going to be outside, look for those kinds of clothes while shopping.
